Osmanthus Green Tea | 桂花綠茶

From the city of Guilin, which literally translates to “Osmanthus Forest”, the osmanthus flower is infused with green tea leaves to create a unique combination of bright green tea complimented by the fruity fragrance of ripe peaches and apricots.

For folks who are unfamiliar with the osmanthus, this flower may not be as well-known overseas as jasmine or chrysanthemum, but it is equally treasured as one of the most prized flowers in Chinese culture. Osmanthus’ role in Chinese culture can be seen from the countless odes to the flower seen in poetry and paintings, as well as the myriad of uses it has in Chinese cuisine (esp. in traditional sweets such as osmanthus jellies, cakes, sweet soups).

While osmanthus buds can be consumed all year round, they reach their peak bloom and fragrance during the eighth month on the lunar calendar—the same month as the Mid-Autumn festival (usually August/September in the Gregorian calendar). During this time, the osmanthus flower earns its nicknames “九里香” (trans. “fragrance of 9 li’s” [li is a traditional unit of measurement that is =0.5km]) because its lightly sweet scent wafts through air and perfumes the entire village with each breeze that blows by. For this reason, activities such as sipping osmanthus wine, pairing osmanthus tea with mooncakes, or admiring osmanthus flowers are key parts of the Mid-Autumn festival celebration.
